Boston College vs U Mass Preview

on

Boston CollegeThe Boston College Eagles are set to open their season against the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in Gillette Stadium on Saturday, officially kicking off the 2014 season fro both teams.

Boston College finished last season with an overall record of 7-6, a notable improvement over their record in the 2012 season. BC finished with a 4-4 in conference record, but did lose both games they played against the top 25 ranked teams in the FBS.

U Mass, on the other hand, is coming off a terrible season, finishing last season with an overall record of 1-11, losing 7 of the 8 games they played within the MAC conference, also losing both games they played against the top 25.

Boston College enters the season after playing to the 71st ranked scoring offense, averaging 27.7 points per game while allowing 28.9 points per game on average, good enough for the 78th overall scoring defense. While those numbers don’t lead to the conclusion that BC is an elite team, they have definitely emerged as a team you can’t overlook in the ACC.

U Mass was simply terrible last year, with the 2nd worst offense in the FBS subdivision, averaging just 11.7 points per game in their games last year, earning them the 124th ranked scoring offense. Their defense wasn’t much better, ranked 98th overall in scoring defense by allowing 33.0 points per game. With that kind of performance, it is no wonder why the Minutemen finished with the record they did.

While U Mass would definitely like to win their game against BC, the disparity in talent will simply be too much for them to overcome. BC should win this one on road, before their home opener against Pitt in week 2, handily.

The Eagles will take this one 38-13.
