Chicago Bears Martellus Bennett Status Still Unknown

Martellus BennettMartellus Bennett, tight end for the Chicago Bears, did not participate in the Bears 34-28 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Friday as part of his indefinite suspension from the team.

Bears head coach Marc Trestman said it is unknown as to whether Bennett will rejoin the Bears when the team resumes training camp on Sunday.

“I can’t say that. It has not been decided one way or the other,” Trestman said. “We’ll continue to get focused a little bit on that over the next 24 hours, and certainly I’ll let you know on Sunday where we are.”

with Bennett out, the rosters reserve tight ends got some extra playing time. 5th year NFL veteran Zach Miller made the most of this extra playing time racking up 68 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 catches in the victory. Other back ups Dante Rosario and Jeron Mastrud combined for 44 yards on 4 catches.

The production from the tight end spot will not have any impact as to when the Bears decide to reinstate Bennett according to Trestman.

“I think these are completely two independent issues that have nothing to do with each other,” he said. “What we’ve talked about regarding Martellus hasn’t changed. We’re looking forward to getting him back as soon as it’s the right time. We’ll continue to address that each and every day. We’ll continue to evaluate the guys who played at the tight end position tonight.”

The suspension took place following an on the field altercation with rookie cornerback, and Bears 1st round pick, Kyle Fuller during practice after Fuller took Bennett to the group while attempting to strip the ball after a catch.

That incident seems to have been the last straw leading to Bennett’s suspension as he has reportedly had multiple incidents over the past month.
