Cleveland Browns Name Brian Hoyer Starter for Week 1

Brian HoyerThe  have announced that Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback, over rookie Johnny Manziel, when the Browns open the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7th.

“He was the clear leader from the beginning,” said coach Mike Pettine in a statement released through the team. “We’ve maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player. Brian has done a great job in the meeting rooms and with his teammates on the practice field and in the locker room.”

Hoyer started against the Washington Redskins for Monday’s preseason game, but didn’t have a particularly strong game, completing just 2 of 6 passes for 16 yards. Manziel later completed 7 of 16 passes, but did not look particularly strong in his extended look either.

Manziel was also caught on camera during Monday’s game flipping off the Redskins bench.

Hoyer entered training camp as the starter, and while he hasn’t blown away the Browns with his performance, he has done nothing to lose the job, and more importantly, Manziel has done nothing worthy of taking the job from Hoyer.

“I think Brian’s been very poised,” Pettine said Wednesday. “I think he’s handled the situation well. He’s had a lot of things going on.

“I think it’s especially good, as an offensive unit, to go out and play and gain cohesion and chemistry. That was one of the reasons I wanted to go ahead and make the decision before this third preseason game so that (Hoyer and the rest of the starting offense) could play as a unit for a good chunk of it.”

For the time being, Hoyer has earned the right to start for the Browns when the regular season rolls around, but to say that he will be the surefire starter for the rest of the season would certainly be a stretch.
