Colgate vs Ball State Preview

on

Ball StateThe Colgate Raiders are set for an opening week contest with the Ball State Cardinals in a game that both teams are looking to win in order to get their season’s off to the kind of start they want.

The Raiders finished with a 4-8 overall record, ending the season 3-2 in Patriot conference play. Ball State enjoyed a good season last year in the MAC, finishing the season with a 10-3 record, while winning 7-1 within conference play. Ball State did, however, lose their only game played against a member of the FBS top 25.

Colgate, while enjoying an okay in conference record, had an extremely poor showing against their out of conference opponents, something that they hope to change this season. If the Raiders are able to overcome their out of conference struggles, they may be able to emerge as a decent team within the FCS subdivision.

Ball State, on the other hand is looking to enjoy continued success within their conference and the FBS. The Cardinals ranked 16th in total scoring offense, finishing the season ranked 16th overall in the FBS, scoring an average of 38.5 points per game. The Ball State defense wasn’t as effective, allowing 24.7 points per game, good enough for the 47th overall ranked scoring defense.

The Raiders are looking to overcome a tough 2013 season, and beating Ball State would be a good start to their season. Ball State, on the other hand, is looking to start their season with a game that they should win. A victory over Ball State isn’t something that is out of the reach of an FCS team, but the Cardinals are going to be a tough victory to get.

The Cardinals will win this game relatively handily, led by their offense, Ball State wins 31-17.
