Derrick Rose Sat Out Team USA Exhibition

Derrick Rose 4Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick rose as a late scratch from Team USA’s Wednesday night exhibition game against the Dominican Republic in Madison Square Garden.

Despite sitting out practice on Monday and Tuesday, rose was still expected to play come game time, but the team decided to have Rose sit the game out so he could continue to rest his surgically rebuilt knees, as well as get players still fighting for a roster spot more minutes to show what they could bring to the Team USA squad set to compete in the FIBA World Cup.

Bull’s coach Tom Thibodeau, who is serving as an assistant coach for Team USA under head coach Mike¬†Krzyzewski, confirmed to reporters that there is no reason for alarm with Rose missing the game.

“He’s fine. He’s just getting another day of rest. We gave him a couple days after the game Saturday in Chicago, and he didn’t practice yesterday, so we thought the best thing to do would be to give him another day because we wanted to look at some other players today anyway.”

Rose did participate in Wednesday’s shoot around before the game, and when asked about sitting out after the game made sure to emphasize he sat out because of general fatigue, nothing specifically having to do with his knees.

Rose’s first taste of competitive basketball after recovering from his 2nd season ending knee injury in less than 2 years came in last Saturday’s Team USA exhibition against Brazil.

Rose is one of the players expected to be a lock for the Team USA squad, and should be rested and ready to go by the time Team USA’s next exhibition game, to take place on Saturday against Puerto Rico, rolls around.
