Fresno State vs USC Preview

USC

The Fresno State Bulldogs are slated to open the 2014 college football season in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the Bulldogs take on the University of Southern California Trojans as both teams seek a victory to start off the season.

The Bulldogs finished last season with an overall record of 11-2, finishing with a record of 7-1 from within the Mountain West. The Bulldogs did lose the only game that they played against the FBS top 25. The Trojans will enter play in the 2014 season ranked at number 15 in the country after finishing last season with a record of 10-4 while also recording a 6-3 record within the PAC 12. USC did play 2 games against other teams in the top 25, of which they won one.

Fresno State enters this season looking to continue the success they enjoyed last year, once again acting as a team from a non traditional power conference that can’t be overlooked in competition. The Bulldogs were led by their offense last season scoring an average of 43.4 points per game, ranking 6th overall in scoring offense in the country. Fresno Stae didn’t have much success defensively, allowing 30.3 points per game and earning the rank of 87th overall in the FBS.

USC, on the other hand, did not have as much success on the offensive side of the ball last season, scoring an average of 29.7 points per game, earning them the ranking of the 61st overall team in scoring offense. The Trojans were a force to be reckoned with defensively though, allowing just 21.2 points per game, good enough for the 16th overall ranking in points allowed, an impressive feat in the PAC 12 which is full of high powered offenses.

Despite Fresno State not being ranked, this should be a good matchup, and though USC has the home field advantage, they should be put on upset alert. The Bulldogs will upset the Trojans, 31-27.
