Hampton vs Old Dominion Preview

on

Old dominionThe Hampton Pirates are slated to open their 2014 season against the Old Dominion Monarchs as both teams seek the always important first win of the season.

The Pirates finished last season with a 4-8 overall record on the 2013 year, while finishing with a 4-4 record within the FCS subdivision’s MEAC conference.

The Monarchs, on the other hand, enjoyed a lot more success last season finishing with a record of 8-4 last season. It is noteworthy that neither Hampton, nor Old Dominion, played any games against teams ranked in the FBS top 25 last season.

Hampton is looking to experience a turn around this season and imrprove their record in the MEAC, and overall, so they can begin to compete more seriously in the FCS, and strive toward competing for an FCS championship. Beating Old Dominion would help set the Pirates upon that path as well.

The Monarchs are looking to improve their record overall and within the Conference USA in order to compete for a more legitimate bowl game. The Monarchs ranked 7th in the FBS last season in scoring offense, scoring an average of 42.3 points per game. Their defense was ranked 103rd in scoring defense however, allowing an average of 34.0 points per game. The disparity between their offensive prowess and their defensive ability helped lead to what could have been a better overall record.

While both teams would like a win on opening day, the offense of Old Dominion will be difficult for the Pirates to overcome and eek out an upset against against Old Dominion.

Old Dominion should take this one with relative ease, and beat the Pirates. Old Dominion comes out on top in this contest 35-17, as the Monarchs strive for improvement.
