Kansas City Chiefs Extend Alex Smith

on

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Alex Smith has reportedly reached a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs to remain with the franchise until 2018. The negotiations over a new contract has been going on for several months, with both the Chiefs and Smith’s agent Tom Condon expressing confidence that an agreement would be in place before the start of the regular season. The Chiefs play their first game of the regular season next weekend against Tennessee.

The announcement that an agreement had been reached was initially reported by the Kansas City Star and the story was quickly picked up by news outlets across the nation. According to a source that spoke on the condition of anonymity, the Chiefs extended an offer for a four-year extension at $68 million. Smith reportedly accepted the terms and signed the agreement. The new contract supposedly gives him $45 million in new guarantees. The team has not confirmed or denied the terms of the contract.

Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in the last offseason for a pair of second-round draft picks and is slated to earn about $7.5 million this season. In his first year with the Chiefs, Smith threw for 3,313 yards, a career high for him. He had 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions for the season. With him at quarterback, the Chiefs went on to have an 11-5 record for the season. In the playoffs against the Indianapolis Colts, Smith threw for four touchdowns, but the Colts ultimately prevailed 45-44.

Several other quarterbacks have also signed lucrative long-term deals with their teams recently, including Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers and Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the news of a long-term contract with the Chiefs came as a surprise to some. Smith’s play in the preseason has been shaky at best, including the release of two interceptions in the red zone during last week’s game against Minnesota. For the past three seasons, Smith’s won-loss record is 30-9-1. He hopes to be even better this upcoming season, but that remains to be seen.
