Landon Donovan, MLS All-Stars Shock Bayern Munich

landon-donovanIn Landon Donovan’s 14th MLS All Star game, he scored the winning goal against German juggernaut Bayern Munich, giving the MLS an upset victory. Donovan scored the winning goal for the MLS All-Stars in the 70th minure, capping off the AllStar’s comeback victory.

“I’m proud to be a part of this league,” Donovan said after the victory. “For many years, those of us that were in this league were sort of looked down upon for staying here and playing here. “This was a big moment for our league. And we understand the game doesn’t count for anything. We know Bayern are in their preseason and their best players didn’t play. But they were still competitive and those guys wanted to win just like we did.”

The Bundesliga champions had 7 members of the German World Cup roster on their team, though many didn’t play until the final 10 minutes of the match. The MLS All Stars also had some members from the US World Cup squad on their roster, most notable Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley.

In the 8th minute of the match, Robert Lewandowski scored the opening goal to give Bayern a 1 nil lead early in the contest. The equalizer was netted in the 51st minute of the match by Bradley Wright-Phillups of the New York Red Bulls, giving the MLS squad some momentum.

As Donovan said, this is not a game that counted for anything. Bayern Munich was closing out their preseason, resting a good amount of their best talent, but the MLS All Stars came to compete, and to win. The showing of the US League’s best against on of the world’s best clubs, may go to show that the MLS is a stronger league than most had given it credit for.
