Los Angeles Dodgers Send PTNL to Cubs For Darwin Barney

on

Dodgers RumorsWith the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the Los Angeles Dodgers sent a player to be named later for Darwin Barney of the Chicago Cubs.

Barney, who had been recently designated for assignment in Chicago has been hitting .230, with a .265 on base percentage in 217 plate appearances. Being designated for assignment gave the Cubs organization 10 days to trade, release, or waive Barney.

Barny will join a Los Angeles Dodgers team as an off the bench player, likely being their 4th middle infielder behind Hanley Ramirez, Dee Gordon, and Justin Turner while Chone Figgens is on the DL with a hip injury.

Though Barney is not a huge offensive threat, his defense at second base has been standout.

Since the Cubs designated Barney for assignment they have begun to call up various organizational prospects, the most notable of whom is Arismendy Alcantara, a second baseman.

Alcantara was having a solid season with triple-a Iowa with a batting average of .307, an on base percentage of .353, while also contributing 10 homeruns, 41 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases.

With this move the Dodgers have added depth to a lineup that, to this point has given them a 59-47 record and a 1.5 game lead in a very tight race with the Giants for control of the NL West.

Meanwhile the Chicago Cubs hold a record of 42-61, leaving them 15.5 games back of the division leading Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

For two teams headed in very opposite directions as the season begins entering the stretch drive for the playoffs, this move may help the dodgers secure their position, while also allowing the Cubs to get some of their up and coming prospects some much needed big league experience before they try again next year.
