Montana vs Wyoming Preview

on

WyomingThe Montana Grizzlies are set to begin their 2014 season on Saturday against the Wyoming Cowboys as both teams are looking to begin the season with a win in their quests to improve from their respective 2013 campaigns.

The Grizzlies play in the FCS subdivision’s Big Sky Conference, and finished last season with an overall record of 10-3, while finishing 6-2 within their conference. The Cowboys, on the other hand, play out of the FBS subdivision’s Mountain West Conference. the Cowboys finished last season with a 5-7 overall record, and only won 3 of the 8 games that Wyoming played within their own conference. Wyoming also lost both games they played against the FBS top 25 ranked teams.

The Grizzlies had a strong season last year and are hoping to take the success from last year into this year. If the Grizzlies do manage to improve their already impressive record, they should be considered genuine contenders for the FCS title in the upcoming season.

The Cowboys are looking to bounce back from a sub par season in the Mountain West from last season. The Cowboys had some success offensively, as they averaged scoring 31.3 points per game, good enough for the 55th overall ranking in FBS scoring offense. Wyoming’s defense was what was the primary factor in the Cowboy’s struggles last season as they allowed, 36.7 points per game last season, earning the ranking of 111th overall scoring defense in the FBS.

While most gut reactions to any game between teams from the FBS and FCS would be that the FBS team is an overwhelming favorite, the flip may be flipped in this one. With the success Montana enjoyed last year, and the difficulties Wyoming suffered, the Grizzlies are poised to upset the FBS team. Montana will take this one over Wyoming in a hard fought contest, 31-24.
