Oakland Raiders David Ausberry Injured At Camp

David AusberryThe Oakland Raiders squad has suffered its first loss of training camp, with tight end David Ausberry, the current number 1 tight end on the Raiders depth chart, will undergo an unspecified medical procedure on Wednesday after injuring his knee over the weekend, and be forced to miss some time.

There is no preset timetable for Ausberry to return, vaulting second year player Mychal Rivera into the number 1 spot on the depth chart as well as providing opportunities to Brian Leonhart and Nick Kasa.

In his rookie season, Rivera played in all 16 games as well as getting 3 starts on the year. He racked up 38 catches for 407 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Ausberry, drafted in the 7th round as a wide receiver from USC, missed his first day of camp on Monday after finishing Saturday’s practice out. Ausberry¬†missed all of the 2013 season after he was placed on the injured reserve after sustaining a left shoulder injury during the preseason last year.

“The sky’s the limit with this offense,” said Rivera, the heir apparent to Ausberry’s starting job. “Expectations are high for me, this offense, and I’m excited to see what we can do.”

The Raiders will have their first opportunity to showcase their offense in this Friday’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Raiders head coach Dennis Allen didn’t give a clear answer when asked if Ausberry, entering his 4th year in the NFL, would be back before the end of the preseason.

“We should be able to get him back at some point and time,” Allen said. “I don’t know how long that is going to be. We’ll have to evaluate that as we go along.”
