Rice vs Notre Dame preview

on

Notre Dame
The Rice Owls are set to open their 2014 college football season against the Notre Dame Fighing Irish in a game that both squads are looking to win in order to give the teams a solid boost to get the season started up. The Owls finished the 2013 season with a record of 10-4 overall while going 7-1 within play in the Conference USA. Rice finished the season losing the only game that they played against competition in the FBS top 25. The home team, the Fighting Irish, comes into this season ranked number 17 in the country after posting a record of 9-4 last season, losing 3 of the 4 games that the Irish played against teams within the top 25.

Rice is looking to continue the success that they enjoyed last season within the Conference USA, and they would like to continue being a team that other teams, no matter where they are ranked, have to consider a serious challenge. The Owls finished last season ranked 63rd overall in scoring offense as they averaged putting 29.6 points on the board every game. The Owls defense finished the season ranked 42nd overall in points allowed in the FBS, allowing an average of 24.4 point per game.

The Irish are looking to prove to any of their critics that they belong where they sit in the rankings and try to assert themselves as legitimate contenders for a playoff spot this season. Notre Dame finished the season ranked 75th in scoring offense last year as they only managed to put an averaged of 27.2 points up per game. Notre Dame enjoyed a strong defensive performance, ranking 27th in points allowed, allowing 22.4 points per game.

While the Irish will likely topple the Rice Owls, and I am predicting a 31-27 victory for the Irish, should be considered a ranked team on upset alert going into Saturday.
