New Orleans SaintsIn the end it didn’t really matter of he was classified a tight end or a wide receiver. The deal makes Graham the highest-paid tight end in NFL history, topping the $27.55 million the Indianapolis Colts gave Dallas Clark in 2008. Graham’s signing bonus is $12 million.

“We are very excited to have this contract done,” Saints executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis later said in a statement. “‘We appreciate the hard work and professionalism that Jimmy Graham and his agent Jimmy Sexton have exhibited during this process. We are all looking forward to Jimmy’s continued success on the field as we pursue a championship together.”

The two sides avoided an ugly contract dispute and reached an agreement before the Tuesday 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term contracts. Both sides appear happy with the deal.

Graham has filed a grievance over whether he is a tight end or wide receiver for the purposes of the franchise tag and lost the decision, handing the Saints all the leverage in the dispute. Apparently cooler heads prevailed and a compromise was reached

Graham had 86 receptions for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2013 and has established himself as teh primeior tight end in the NFL, and now he is being paid like it.
