South Florida vs Western Carolina Preview

The Western Carolina Catamounts are set to open up the college football season this Saturday against the University of South Florida Bulls as both squads look to begin this season with a week 1 win.

Western Carolina comes into the contest after finishing the last season with a 2-10 record, including just 1 win out of the Southern conference within the FCS subdivision. The Bulls also had a feeble 2013 season, winning only 2 out of their 12 games, with both of those wins coming from within the conference, along with 6 of the losses. The Bulls also lost all 3 contests they played against teams ranked in the FBS top 25.

Western Carolina is looking to improve on their overall record from last season and become a force to be reckoned with, both within the Southern Conference, as well as in the FCS as a whole. Getting a win over the FBS Bulls would provide a big boost on which Western Carolina could start the season.

The Bulls are also looking to improve on their record from last season, hoping to assert themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the American Conference. The Bulls defense was middle of the back as far as FBS rankings, as they finished ranked 74th in scoring defense after allowing an average of 28.6 points per game. Offensively, the Bulls were atrocious, having the 3rd worst offense, ranked 123rd overall in scoring offense in the FBS as they averaged 13.8 points per game.

Both teams would obviously strive for a victory in week 1, as it would be half of either teams win total from the last season. This will likely be a close contest between 2 teams that aren’t particularly strong, but the Bulls, who are playing at home get the edge in my book. The Bulls take this one, 17-14.
