The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are set to take on the Mississippi Bulldogs in the season opening game for both teams, as both squads are looking to to get their season started off right and get the victory.

Southern Miss is coming into 2014 after finishing last year with a record of 1-11, with their only win, along with 7 of their losses, coming from within Conference USA. Southern Miss lost the only contest they played in against competition from the top 25. Mississippi State finished 2013 with a 7-6 record, but only managed to win 3 games within the always tough South Eastern Conference, losing the other 5 they played in the SEC. The Bulldogs did lose all 5 contests they played against the FBS top 25.

The Golden Eagles are looking to improve upon their performance from last season, hoping to assert themselves as a team to e reckoned with in Conference USA. Southern Miss finished 2013 ranked 120th overall in both scoring offense as well as points allowed, scoring 17.1 points per game, while also allowing 41.9 points per game. Southern Miss is looking to upset their in state foe as a way to signal the improvement that they have been striving for so far this offseason.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are looking to continue their resurgence and assert themselves within the super competitive SEC, and maybe even contend for an SEC title. The Bulldogs finished the 2013 season ranked 71st in overall scoring offense, averaging 27.7 points per game. The Bulldogs fared better defensively than a lot of teams, only allowing 23 points per game, earning the ranking of 33rd in overall scoring defense.

The Bulldogs are poised to start this season off with a victory over the Golden Eagles, and kick their season off their season with a 31-14 win.
