on

NevadaThe Southern Utah Thunderbirds are set to get their 2014 season underway in a meeting with the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday, as both teams are looking to begin their 2014 season with a win.

The Southern Utah squad finished last season with an overall record of 8-5, with a record on 5-3 in their contests within the FCS Big Sky conference, and hope to start off the season with a win over an FBS team to push them toward further success this season.

Nevada, on the other hand, finished last season with an overall record of 4-8, with 3 of those wins, and 5 of those losses coming within competition in the Mountain West Conference. 3 of Nevada’s losses against top 25 competition within the FBS subdivision.

Southern Utah is looking to improve upon a decent season within the FCS and start making a drive toward becoming a legitimate contender for the FCS title. Winning Saturday’s game could help propel the Thunderbirds for further success this season.

Nevada’s season last year was marred by poor defensive performance, with little extra help coming from their offense. Nevade ranked 76th overall in the FBS subdivision in offensive scoring out put, averaging 26.9 points per game. The defense on the other hand, was completely ineffective, allowing 34.4 points per game, earning them the rank of 104th overall in scoring defense.

Nevade is looking to get a confidence building victory over Southern Utah to help drive them to a better performance in the Mountain West this season and help distinguish them as more than just a cellar dwelling team. Southern Utah is looking to overcome the challenge of beating an FBS school in the season opener, a task i think they are more than up for.

Southern Utah will take this one in a tight game 21-17.
