Springboks Juan Smith Returning Against Argentina

on

Springboks Juan SmithJuan Smith is set to complete an incredible return on Saturday to international rugby when he runs onto the field in Salta to face Argentina.

The inclusion of Smith at flank is one of the team’s three changes in its first XV, with another four to the bench.

Eben Etzebeth (lock) and Gurthro Steenkamp (prop) will be starting the tight five, while Bakkies Botha and Tendai Mtawarira move to the bench.

Joining them will be Marcell Coetzee alongside the replacements after entering late as one of the substitutes for Williem Alberts who was injured last weekend.

The last change to the team that beat the Argentine’s 13-6 in Pretoria last weekend is the addition on the bench of Lwazi Mvovo.

Heyneke Meyer the coach for South Africa said there are a few options at the blindside flank, but we have decided this would the best opportunity to allow Juan to have a chance.

If it were not for injury, which kept him sidelined in June, he would have been a part in the Castle Lager. He was one of the best players in Toulon after over two years out of the game and was instrumental in helping them win two important competitions.

Aside from leadership and experience, Juan is a great ball carrier and brilliant in the back for lineouts, where Willem Alberts was missed last week. The lineouts are important in the attacking platform and that needs to be improved upon in this week’s game and Meyer said he is sure Juan will give the team another dimension.

Meyer commented that it was good that Eben is back to complete fitness and he will slot into lock without a problem.

Beast recently came back from injury that kept him sidelined for some time and the coaches decided it was best to rotate him with Gurthro due mainly to the short turn around following the travel to Argentina.

The Test on Saturday will be South Africa’s first to Salta, which is located in northwest Argentina.
