Patricio NoriegaPatricio Noriega the new coach at Bayonne refused to be intimidated prior to the opener of the Top 14 against Toulon the reigning champions.

The former Australia and Argentina prop arrived over this past offseason in the Basque country, after spending two seasons with Stade Francais and Racing Metro in Paris.

After letting Christophe Deylaud and Christian Lanta go, Bayonne opted to bring in Noriega for his first job as head coach in France.

He is facing a tough test the first match against Toulon, which won both the Heineken Cup and Top 14 trophies last season.

However, despite the amount of Test stars and World Cup victors who will line up for Toulon, Noriega remains confident that Bayonne will handle the challenge on their home ground.

Noriega told a local newspaper that he is never afraid. The opposition has loads of international players, of which Matt Giteau at the ten is the undoubtedly the most important.

Noriega said Giteau started at scrum half as well as playing with him. He knows the experience the veteran has and that makes him the key to the opponent’s game.

Noriega added that Toulon has a great front row, a solid second row and a back row that can dominate opponents with quick, powerful backs.

The club is very solid, but we are not afraid of Toulon, conclude Noriega.

This will be the first match for Noriega and the rest of the coaching staff at Bayonne and the optimism it there from the players and coaches.

The Bayonne coach added that it is just rugby with 15 against 15 so how much more even can it get.

The players you are opposing have two legs and two arms just as our club does.

The team, said Noriega has a great deal of respect for the champions, buy that is it, as intimidation does not factor into the equation.
