The UTEP Miners are set to kick off the 2014 season against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday as both teams hope to open up their schedule with a victory and get their seasons off to strong starts.

The Miners finished last season with a record of 2-10, winning just 1 of the 8 games that they played within Conference USA. The Miners also lost the only game that they played against competition from the FBS top 25. The Lobos, on the other hand, are coming into the 2014 season after finishing the 2013 season with an overall record of 3-9. The Lobos also finished with an in conference record of 1-7 from within the Mountain West. The Lobos also lost the only game that they played against competition from the top 25.

The Miners are hoping to rebound from a difficult season last year in the pursuit of becoming truly competitive within the Conference USA and be more than a blip on the radar of more prominent teams in the FBS. The Miners struggled both offensively and defensively last season. On offense, the Miners only accumulated 21.3 points per game, earning them the ranking of 103rd in overall scoring offense. The Miners were even worse defensively finishing the season ranked 119th in points allowed, allowing 39.3 points per game.

The Lobos are also looking to recover from an off year. The Lobos hope to achieve greater success within the Mountain West Conference during this upcoming season. Last season, the Lobos enjoyed some offensive success, finishing the season ranking 43rd overall in scoring offense, averaging 32.8 points per game. Defensively, the Lobos were much worse, allowing a staggering 42.8 points a game, earning them the 121st overall defensive ranking.

This will be a little bit of a shootout, as neither team is strong defensively. The Lobos will take this one at their home stadium with a score of 42-28.
