on

Villanova vs Syracuse college footballSYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Villanova Wildcats closed out 2013 with a 6-5 record and a 35-34 win over Delaware and travels to play at the Syracuse Orangemen to open 2014. Syracuse defeated Minnesota 21-17 in the Texas Bowl to finish 7-6 last season.

The Wildcats have a run-oriented spread offense that will be led by junior quarterback John Robertson who threw for 1,957 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 1,405 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2013. Two senior running backs will be pounding out the yards with Robertson as Kevin Monagai (643 yards, 5 TD) and Austin Medley (310 yards, TD) look to continue last season’s offensive success averaging nearly 31 points a game. Senior receiver Poppy Livers and an experienced line will help this unit remain successful.

The interior of the defense will anchor the unit, led by junior middle linebacker Don Cherry who had a team high with 99 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss and senior nose tackle Pat Williams who contributed eight tackles for loss last season. Senior safety Joe Sarnese will be the backbone of the secondary with junior safety Cameron McCurry coming off a four interception season.

Syracuse scored just under 23 points a game last season using a 60/40 run/pass mix led by senior dual-threat quarterback Terrel Hunt (1,638 pass yards, 10 TD; 500 rush yards, 7 TD). However, the run game will have new blood with a pair of senior getting the bulk of the carries with Prince-Tyson Gulley (456 yards, 4 TD) and Adonis Ameen-Moore (26 yards, 0 TD) taking over. An experienced offensive line should help things with four seniors this season.

Defensively, the Cuse would like to improve on allowing 25 points per game. The defensive line will be led by three seniors as defensive ends Robert Welsh and Micah Robinson will be alongside nose tackle Eric Crume who combined for 17.5 tackles for loss a season ago. The senior duo of Cameron Lynch and Dyshawn Davis combined for 118 tackles, 19 for loss, and 6.5 sacks last season. Seniors Brandon Redish and Darius Kelly will patrol the secondary.
