William & Mary vs Virginia Tech Preview

on

virginia techThe William & Mary Tribe is set to open the 2014 college football season against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday as both teams look to begin their seasons on the right foot.

The Tribe plays out of the FCS subdivision and the CAA within it. The Tribe finished last season with a 7-5 record while recording a 4-4 record within the conference. Virginia Tech on the other hand, plays in the FBS and finished with a record of 8-5, while winning 5 0f the 8 games they played within the Atlantic Coast Conference. In addition to the in conference record, the Hokies won 1 of the 3 games they played against teams ranked in the FBS top 25.

The Tribe would love to improve off of their performance from last season, improving to the point of contending within the CAA, potentially even competing for a championship within the FCS. A win over the Hokies would be a major stepping stone for the Tribe if they are looking to prove themselves.

The Hokies are also looking to improve from last season, which was poor by no means. The Hokies succeeded in large part due to their defensive prowess, allowing only 19.3 points per game on average, good enough for the 11th ranked scoring defense in the FBS. The Hokies did struggle, however, offensiveness, only scoring an average of 22.5 points per game, earning them the ranking of 101st overall in scoring offense within the FBS. If the Hokies are able to improve offensively, they can assert themselves as a true force to be reckoned with in the ACC.

While the Tribe will try and compete for an upset over the Hokies, the Virginia Tech defense will simply be too much for the FCS squad to overcome. Virginia Tech takes this one by a score of 24-7.
