Atlanta Falcons Sam Baker Likely Done For The Season

Sam BakerAtlanta Falcons tackle Sam Baker was carted off the field during Saturday’s preseason game, a bad sign to start with, but now after there has been more time to assess the injury, the news doesn’t get any better. Baker will almost certainly miss the entire 2014-2015 season with a torn patella tendon.

Will this is only the preliminary diagnosis, Baker will also undergo tests to confirm the diagnosis, but in the somewhat likely event that he does have a torn patella tendon, he will miss the  upcoming season, a major problem for the Falcons offensive line, forcing shifts along the line in an effort to continue to defend quarterback Matt Ryan.

The loss of Baker will shift rookie offensive lineman Jake Matthews into the left tackle spot, arguably one of the most demanding spots on the line, forcing the Falcons to have a rookie defend Ryan’s blindside. While Matthews certainly has the size to play left tackle, his being a rookie is worrisome, because no matter how talented, rookies make mistakes.

The effect of the injury continues to snowball through the Falcons offensive line forcing either Gabe Carimi or Ryan Schraeder to step into the right tackle position. Atlanta certainly has more depth at offensive line than they did last year, but being forced to tap into it so early into the season, and at such a vital spot on the line is something the Falcons would have preferred to avoid.

The Falcons believe themselves to be a true playoff contender, and in order for them to succeed in their playoff goals, Matt Ryan is going to need to excel, and be well protected. The now somewhat patchwork offensive line is going to be critical for Atlanta’s success and now, some fans have to be a little concerned.
