Baltimore Orioles Manny Machado Sprains Knee

Manny MachadoBaltimore Orioles 3rd baseman Manny Machado was injured on a broken bat grounder towards short stop in Monday’s 11-3 victory over the New York Yankees.

As the ball rolled toward Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who would throw for the out at 1st, Machado collapsed in the batters box, grasping his knee in clear and obvious pain.

The Orioles initially described Machado’s as a sprain of the right knee. The team also said that Machado will undergo an MRI on his knee on Tuesday to further determine the extent of the injury.

“We’ll just wait for the results,” Machado said in front of his locker, next to a pair of crutches stood. “Hopefully it is on the good side other than the bad.”

“There’s a chance we may have dodged a bullet,” said Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

The injury occurred in the third inning. When Machado took his swing, he twisted his right knee severely, and that is when he collapsed.

Orioles head trainer Richie Bancells came out to check on Machado on the field, and with the help of Bancells and Showalter, Machado was able to limp off the field.

Before Machado had to make his exit, he had hit a double and a sacrifice fly. After the injury, Chris Davis took Machado’s place, and hit a 2 run home run in the fifth, giving the Orioles a 4-3 lead on the way to their eventual blowout victory over the Yankees.

“If you’ve been through what he’d kind of been through in the past, that initial feeling is pretty negative,” Showalter told reporters after the game Monday, “but the doctors have looked at it and everything. He’s getting some best-case scenarios that we’re going to dwell on until the MRI says something different.”
