Bears Open Camp Hoping to Improve Defense

Bears NewsThe Chicago Bears defense last year, especially the defensive line, was virtually nonexistent. Ranking 30th in total defense, and dead last in rush defense, the 2013-2014 Bears defense was anything but the Monsters of the Midway from the franchise’s storied history.

One of the biggest acquisitions the Bears made this offseason was adding longtime division foe, Jared Allen, to the mostly revamped defensive front four. Joining Allen on the new Bears front lines include defensive ends Willie Young and Lamarr Houston, and tackles Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton, drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively.

Allen, entering his 11th NFL season, will be asked to provide a veteran presence on the Bears defensive line, especially after the departure of Julius Peppers to division rival Green Bay. When the Bears brought in Jared Allen from the Vikings, they brought in one of the most efficient pass rushers in recent league history.

The 5 time pro-bowler and 1 time NFC defensive player of the year brings into the season an impressive 128.5 sacks, and 29 forced fumbles. With Jared Allen at the head of the new Chicago Bears defensive line, leading a largely reconfigured defense, the Bears hope to regain their form, and live up to their reputation as the Monsters of the Midway.

With the now potent offense leading the way, and a new and improved defense to support them, the Chicago Bears enter the 2014 season with eyes toward entering another chapter into the annals of Chicago Bears history.
