Ben Te’o Switches to Rugby Union

Ben Te’oBen Te’o the star from the South Sydney Rabbitohs has sealed a switch at season end to the rugby union. He has signed with Leinster the powerful club in Ireland.

Te’o earlier in the season made the announcement that 2014 would be the last season with South Sydney.

Tuesday afternoon that possibility of his move to the 15-man code became a reality as Leinster announced on their official website that they had signed the strong backrower.

Leinster’s website quoted Te’o as saying it was a great step for him personally and the type of challenge he looked forward to during this stage of his rugby career.

He told the Leinster website that the club was one of the best in the northern hemisphere and the change to return to play in the union was more than he could pass up.

He called his decision difficult for both leaving the Souths and the league. However, he knows what Matt O’Connor and his coaching staff have developed in Leinster is special and he looks forward to getting stuck in starting next season.

O’Connor the coach at Leinster is excited about acquiring Te’o despite the Queensland and Rabbitohs star’s lack of exposure of late to 15-man code.

O’Connor said he dealt with the same thing as a player and knows with Te’o’s professionalism, his skill set and physicality there should be no reason the transition will not be successful.

O’Connor continued by saying that both codes were filled with players that made the transition.

O’Connor called Te’o an explosive and dynamic ball carrier and his physicality will enhance the club’s offering both on the attack and defensively.

Earlier during the season, Te’o in an interview said he was looking to leave the NRL after he became fed up with the treatment he was receiving from the media.

The star had to fight off allegations last year that he had hit a woman on the Gold Coast.

He was cleared after an investigation but said he still was being hounded for the unfounded claims.
