Boston Red Sox: Lester to Oakland A’s For Cespedes, Gomes

Red Sox TradeThe Oakland Athletics, better know as the Oakland A’s, have acquired Boston Red Sox ace Jon Lester in a deal that will include slugger Yoenis Cespedes.

The deal also has the Red Sox sending outfielder Jonny Gomes to Oakland for the A’s competitive balance draft pick.

Lester has enjoyed a lot of success with the Red Sox, helping lead the club to two World Series titles while leading the club’s rotation.

Lester, who becomes a free agent at the end of the season, has stated that he would prefer to remain in Boston, but contract talks between the all star pitcher and the Red Sox organization stalled when Lester reportedly turned down a 4-year $70 million contract.

The acquisition of Lester who is 10-7 this year with a 2.52 ERA, will add to an already impressive A’s rotation which features All Stars Jeff Samardzija and Scott Kazmir, as well as exciting young pitcher Sonny Gray.

This addition, however did cost the A’s. The loss of the two time reigning MLB Home Run Derby winner and exceptional slugger Yoenis Cespedes is nothing to scoff at.

Cespedes, who is hitting .256 with 17 home runs and 67 RBIs in 101 games this year, will provide a big power bat to a Red Sox lineup that already features slugger David Ortiz.

While it is unlikely that this trade will help the Red Sox explode out of last place in the AL East and into the playoff race, they have begun building a stronger lineup for next year, and pose even more of an offensive threat to other teams in the race.

The A’s, however, have bolstered their already impressive rotation and hope that this move take them from one of the best teams in the Major Leagues this year, to World Series champions.
