Brian Hoyer To Start In Cleveland Browns Preseason Opener

Brian HoyerBrian Hoyer is set to start for the Cleveland Browns when they open their preseason schedule in Detroit on Friday.

“It was [Hoyer’s] job,” coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday. “He was ‘the one’ coming into it. We did want to mix the groups up, as we did. But he’s done nothing to have that taken away from him, so he’ll be out there with the starters.”

Pettine did mention that 1st round draft pick, quarterback Johnny Manziel that he could see some playing time with the starters. Pettine also indicated that it would be fair to assume that the week 1 starter in the regular season will be determined by the performance of the quarterbacks in the first 2 preseason games so the Browns would have their starters set by week 3 of the preseason.

“I think more weight will be put on those, as I said before, because it’s live reps,” Pettine said.

Manziel, who has taken the announcement well, has laid out what he thinks he needs to do to improve, “I just need to keep learning the playbook, and hopefully in due time I’ll be able to be comfortable with a lot broader region of the playbook instead of the little area that I am now.” Manziel continued. “It’s steadily growing each day. That’s what I need to continue to do is get better, expand my knowledge of the playbook and expand my knowledge of this game.”

Many expect that Manziel will be the starter week 1 of the regular season, if for no other reason than the rookie is incredibly popular, already leading the NFL in jersey sales for the year.

The Browns, however, appear to be sticking to their philosophy that it is a true competition to win the starting job, and that it is Hoyer’s job to lose.
