Broncos WR Wes Welker Suspended by NFL

Wes-WelkerDenver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker will miss the first four games of the NFL season, but not for concussion related issues. Welker was suspended by the NFL yesterday for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Welker won’t be eligible for return until week six because the Broncos have a bye in week four.

According to sources the Broncos have known since before training camp that Welker might be suspended but was holding out hope that he might win his appeal.
It was reported that Welker failed his drug test after taking ecstasy laced with amphetamines while at the Kentucky Derby this past May.

That was the same event where Welker handed out $100 bills on his way out of Churchill Downs after a cashier mistakenly overpaid him almost $15,000 in winnings.

Earlier this week welcome return to practice after suffering his second concussion since last December.
Welker will join kicker Matt Prater who is also serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Losing Welker will be tough on the Broncos offense. The Broncos can move Emmanuel Sanders, Andre Caldwell or even backup tight endJacob Tamme to the slot, but they won’t have the same mind meld as Manning and Welker in tight spaces such as key third downs and in the red zone.

The  Broncos open their 2014 season posting Indianapolis on Sunday, September 7.
