Chicago Bears Sign Santonio Holmes

holmesThe Chicago Bears have added another weapon for quarterback Jay Cutler to throw to in former New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes as a free agent signing.

The Bears already boast one of the top receiving duos in the NFL with Brandon Marshall and, last years breakout receiving star, Alshon Jeffery holding the top 2 spots on the Bears depth chart. If you look more closely at their roster, in situations where the Bears want to have 3 wide outs on the field, the Bears options for the 3rd receiver were pretty slim.

The Bears back up wide receivers, until today’s reported signing of Holmes, consisted only of Marquess Wilson, Josh Morgan, and Eric Weems, none of whom would put the fear in defensive backs like big time receivers do.

Holmes is entering the twilight of his career, now 30 years old, and has only ever posted 1 1,000 yard receiving season in his career, and that was back in 2009 when he still played for the Steelers.

Holmes tenure with the Jets was widely ineffective, and he only played in an average of 11 games each season he spent in New York.

Holmes still possesses explosive potential though, and now with the big arm of Jay Cutler throwing the passes, and 2 other big time wide receiver threats, Holmes could be poised to enjoy somewhat of a return to form.

The addition of Holmes added to a receiving core with Jeffery and Marshall, along with the catching talents of tight end Martellus Bennett and running back Matt Forte, have the Bears poised to enjoy an even more productive offensive season under second year coach Marc Trestman.

At the bare minimum, Holmes will be another piece to compete for the Bears 3rd wide receiver slot on the depth chart.
