Chiefs Alex Smith Wants Extension, Willing to Wait

Kansas City Chiefs NewsKansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is looking for a new deal and apparently is willing to wait as long as takes to get it. Smith, 30, is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season, the final year of his current contract with the Chiefs and he wants to be paid like the elite quarterback in the league.

Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Tony Romo and Matthew Stafford all recently have signed long-term contracts, deals worth approximately $17 million to $18 million annually.

Smith helped lead the Chiefs to the playoffs last season after passing for 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.

“Certainly when you’re talking about comparables and what the marketplace is for a quarterback, certainly you’re looking at that,” Smith told the Kansas City Star . “And I feel like my body of work of the last three, four years is right up there with a lot of those guys. No question, when you’re trying to put a value on something like that, you look at a lot of stuff.”

The Chiefs, with about $9.4 million of salary cap space available, and will have to be creative if they are to sign Smith, 30, and outside linebacker Justin Houston, 25, who are entering the final years of their contracts before they can become unrestricted free agents.

Smith said if a contract extension isn’t wrapped up by the start of the season, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done before next March.
