Colorado State vs Colorado: College Football Week 1 Preview and Analysis

Colorado State

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams won the Gildan New Mexico Bowl 48-45 over Washington State to close out an 8-6 2013 campaign. The Rams open with a neutral site game against in-state rival the Colorado Buffaloes who finished 2013 4-8 with a 24-17 loss at Utah.

Colorado State looks to continue the offensive ways that led to averaging 35 points a game. Senior quarterback Garrett Grayson threw for 3,327 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and will be tossing to three familiar faces in wide-outs sophomore Rashard Higgins (64 catches, 795 yards, 6 TD) and junior Joe Hansley (48 catches, 557 yards, TD) as well as senior tight end Kivon Cartwright (25 catches, 411 yards, 6 TD). The offensive line returns a lot of experience as well.

Leading tacklers from 2013 senior linebackers Max Morgan (129 tackles) and Aaron Davis (113 tackles, 6 for loss) lead a defense that looks to improve on allowing nearly 29 points a game. All four starters return in the secondary with corners Bernard Blake and Deandre Elliott combining for 21 passes defensed last season. Safety Trent Matthews led the secondary with four interceptions last season.

The Colorado offense scored 25 points a game last season and will have sophomore quarterback Sefo Liufau (1,779 yards, 12 TD, 8 INT) at the helm. The running back tandem of Michael Adkins and Christian Powell (1,097 yards, 9 TD) will continue in the backfield. Two of the top three receivers return as well as does the offensive line so things should roll a little better.

However, 38 points a game is way too many to allow on defense and the Buffs must improve on that side of the ball. Sophomore linebacker Gilliam Addison led the team with 119 tackles and 10 for loss. Otherwise the defense returns some experienced players who are hungry to turn around last season’s lapses.
