FSU Wide Receiver Isaiah Jones Academically Ineligible

FSUFlorida State university Seminoles sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Jones has been ruled academically ineligible to participate in the 2014 football season, further opening competition for the Seminoles 2nd wide receiver position, a spot on the depth chart that Jones looked likely to earn.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher has said that Jones will remain on the team, and will be able to practice with his teammates, but he will be unable to participate in games come the regular season.

Part of the Seminoles 2013 recruiting class, the 6’4″, 4 star recruit out of Milton, Florida played in 5 games as a true freshman catching 2 passes for 31 yards in his freshman year.

While those numbers aren’t particularly impressive, with the departures of wide receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Kenny Shaw, the competition for the 2nd wide receiver spot, behind current number 1 receiving target Rashad Greene, has intensified, and Jones was looking likely to be able to fill in that spot after recording 5 receptions for 81 yards in FSU’s spring game.

While he will not be able to be a contributor this year, the Florida State offense still has plenty of young talent at wide receiver that will be more than prepared to earn that spot and make an impact with the defending National Champions.

Without Jones in the competition, freshman, and 5 star recruit, Travis Rudolph, is one of the players to keep your eye on, and though he has dealt with some nagging injuries since joining the Seminoles, when he has participated he has been impressive, drawing the praise of head coach Jimbo Fisher, who said, “That dadgum guy is gonna be a heck of a player.”

With less than a month until the college football season is officially underway, we won’t have to wait much time to see who Fisher puts in the 2nd receiving slot, and watch the champs start their title defense.
