Landon Donovan Set To Retire

landon donovanOne of the biggest icons in USA soccer history, Landon Donovan, plans to retire at the conclusion of the MLS season, he told the media on Thursday.

Donovan, aged 32, is the leading goal scored in MLS history, as well as the leading goal scorer in Team USA international play. On Donovan’s Facebook page, he discussed his decision.

“I don’t write these words lightly and this day carries mixed emotions for me. I am sad to leave a profession that has brought me so much joy. However, after spending half my life as a professional soccer player, I also am excited to begin a new chapter and pursue other opportunities that will challenge me and allow me to grow as a person.”

Donovan said Thursday that the reason for the timing of his announcement was to give his MLS club, the LA Galaxy, enough time to figure out how they are going to reshape the squad in the absence of Donovan.

Donovan made this announcement 1 day after being named the MVP of the MLS All Star game in a victory over the German powerhouse Bayern Munich.

In 17 games for the Galaxy so far this season, Donovan has 4 goals as well as 7 assists, playing primarily from forward and midfield positions on the pitch.

Donovan also indicated a relief at be stepping away from the sport, “I made this decision a couple of weeks ago before the Seattle game [on July 28], and the way I’ve felt and played and enjoyed myself since then I think is reflective in a way of a weight off my shoulders. Now it’s time to enjoy the rest of the season and there’d be no other way than to go out a champion, so that’s my focus.”

When Donovan finally hangs up the kit, he will be known as one of the greatest US born players to ever play the game.
