New York Jets Michael Vick Sees Improvement In Geno Smith

Geno SmithJust two weeks into New York Jets training camp, expected back up Michael Vick is keeping pressure on the Jets 2nd year quarterback Geno Smith, expecting significant improvement.

“He’s going to be great,” Vick said Tuesday after practice. “He’s going to be 10 times better than where he was last year, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Vick fully expects Geno Smith to be one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL this year, something the Jets faithful surely hope to see as well.

Vick, by far the quarterback with the more impressive career, was signed by the Jets in order to push Geno Smith to compete better and truly secure his job as the team’s number 1 quarterback.

Smith is scheduled to start the Jets preseason opener on Thursday, but Vick is expected to play at least one series with the starting offense.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan is certainly looking for a boost on offense as that half of the ball failed to score a touchdown in the teams intersquad scrimmage this past weekend.

“I want to see some production,” Ryan said. “I think we’ll see it. I know [Smith] will have the command. Let’s have the production, too.”

To this point, Smith has had a good, but not outstanding camp. He hasn’t performed in a way to make him lose the starting job, however, his play has not secured him that job.

Smith is confident though, saying he expects to be a top 5 quarterback in the league in the next couple of years. Vick has accepted his role on the squad to be a mentor to Smith and the other young quarterbacks on the roster.

Barring anything alarming in the preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, Smith will remain the Jets starter further into the preseason. The starting job is certainly his to lose.
