North Texas vs Texas Preview

The North Texas Mean Green are set to take on the Texas Longhorns on Saturday as both teams are preparing for the 2014 season, and looking to get the season kicked off with a win.

The Mean Green finished last season with an overall record 9-4 while also finishing with a 6-2 record within the FBS subdivision’s Conference USA. The Mean Green did, however, lose the only contest they played against teams in the ranked within the top 25. The Longhorns are coming into the 2014 season after finishing 2013 with a record of 8-5, also accumulating a record of 7-2 within the Big 12 Conference of the FBS subdivision. In addition, the Longhorns only manage to win 1 of the 5 games they played against the top 25 teams.

The Mean Green are looking to have another successful season within Conference USA. Last season North Texas was led largely by their defense, which ranked 8th in the FBS in points allowed as they allowed an average of 17.8 points per game. The North Texas offense lagged behind their defensive prowess somewhat, ending the season by averaging 31.8 points per game, finishing 2013 ranked 50th overall in scoring offense.

The Longhorns did enjoy a resurgence of success last season as they played toward a slightly above average player. The Longhorns are looking to continue improving this season and become true contenders for the Big 12 title and reenter the national title picture. Longhorns were mostly a middle of the pack team, scoring an average of 29.3 points per game, good enough to ear the distinction as the 66th overall rank. Defensively, the Longhorns allowed an average of 25.8 points, earning the rank of 57th overall in the FBS rankings for points allowed.

The Longhorns and Mean Green are poised to have a good contest, but with the home field advantage Texas will win this one 27-10.
