Northern Iowa v Iowa Preview

IowaIn a match up of in state schools, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers, playing out of the MVFC, are set to open their season against the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, playing out of the Big Ten.

-Keys for Appalachian State Mountaineers:

The UNI Panthers enter this game coming off a 7-5 overall finish in the MVFC last season, the same FCS conference as FCS champion North Dakota State, but finished 3-5 within their conference. The Hawkeyes, on the other hand, come into this season opener off an 8-5 season in which they won 5 of the 8 in conference games they played against a tough Big Ten. Despite their relative success within the conference, the Hawkeyes lost all 3 games they played against top 25 opponents last year.

The Hawkeyes averaged 26.3 points per game during the 2013 college campaign, only good enough for the 81st overall scoring offense in the FBS. What carried the Hawkeyes was their 9th ranked defense, which only allowed an average of 18.9 points per game, helping them slow down some of the high powered Big Ten offenses.

The Panthers didn’t have a terrible season in the FCS last season, playing in a relatively tough conference and enjoying a decent amount of success. UNI wants to build off the success they had last year and compete for an FCS title, and a victory over the Hawkeyes will firmly insert the Panthers into that picture.

Although UNI would love to knock off the Hawkeyes, the defense of the Hawkeyes should be more than enough to keep the Panthers at bay. The Hawkeyes should be able to play to a dominant victory over their week one opponents. I’m prediciting a score of 24-3 as the Panthers won’t be able to overcome the Hawkeyes defense, giving Iowa the start to the season they are looking for as they hope to be competitive in the Big Ten.
