St. Louis Cardinals Justin Masterson Moved to Bullpen

St. Louis Cardinals Justin MastersonSo much for the Justin Masterson experiment.  the St. Louis Cardinals have moved the struggling right-hander to the bullpen in hopes that he might iron out some problems. Masterson was acquired from the Cleveland Indians in July and has made six starts with the  Cardinals going 2-3  with a 7.90 ERA.  Masterson was scheduled to start on Thursday but instead will pitch out of the bullpen.

“We’ve got him in that mindset already,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny told reporters Monday. “When he’ll be actually available to go is still up in the air.”

“[He] gets it. He’s a pro,” Matheny told reporters. “He understands the game, understands where we are and understands where he is. But we’re committed to keep working through this. Maybe this could be something that works for him.”

According to Matheny, Marco Gonzales and Tyler Lyons are the likely candidates to replace Masterson in the rotation on Thursday.

The Cardinals lead the National League Central division by one game over the Milwaukee Brewers  and entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight in the second game of their series.
