Steelers RBs Blount, Bell Facing Marijuana Charges

Leveon BellTwo running backs for the Pittsburgh Steelers, LeGarrette Blount and Le’veon Bell will be charged for possession of Marijuana as a result of a traffic stop Wednesday, the day that the Steelers flew to Philadelphia for their 3rd preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The traffic stop occurred before the team left for Philadelphia in Ross Township. According to detective Brian Kohlhepp told media that traffic officer Sean Stafiej pulled over a Camero being operated by Bell after noticing a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle while on his motorcycle.

While searching the car, Stafiej found a bag containing 20 grams of marijuana, and both Bell and Blount, as well as an additional female passenger, all acknowledged the marijuana was theirs. Bell was taken to the hospital to have blood drawn and is expected to also be charged with driving under the influence of marijuana.

“We are aware of the reports and still gathering information,” Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

There is a chance the team will hold both players out of Thursday’s preseason game, and the NFL is expected to review the incident and determine what, if any, punishment the NFL itself will dole out to the players. Bell did not fly to Philadelphia with the team, but did make his own way to the city to rejoin the team.

The 1, 2 punch of Bell and Blount had been effective so far this preseason. Bell, who last year broke Franco Harris’ record for most yards from scrimmage by a rookie, and Blount, who signed with the Steelers this offense, emerged as the best running back on the New England Patriots last season.

It will be interesting to see how much playing time this incident costs the 2 backs, and how that will affect the Steelers running game.
