Western Michigan v Purdue Preview

To open both their seasons Saturday, the Purdue Boilermakers will host the Western Michigan Broncos in a matchup of 2 teams that were cellar dwellers during the 2013 season. -Keys for Appalachian State Mountaineers:

The Broncos finished last season with a 1-11 record out of the MAC, losing all the games they played in within the conference. The Boilermakers weren’t any more impressive, also finishing the 2013 season with a 1-11 record, losing every in conference game that they played in the tough Big Ten Conference.

Western Michigan struggled both offensively and defensively last season finishing 119th in scoring offense, while also finishing 106th in scoring defense. The combination of a poor defense and an atrocious offense led to the type of season one would expect from teams posting those numbers.

Somewhat shockingly, Purdue was even more inept on both sides of the field than the Broncos, finishing ranked 122nd in scoring offense, while finishing 114th overall in scoring defense. The only saving grace that Purdue has to help explain away their poor performance, is that they do play in one of the more elite conferences in college football, making their weaknesses even more glaring than normal.

Both teams would love nothing more than to improve and leave their 2013 season in the rear view mirror, and on Saturday at 1 team will guarantee that they will at least match their last season’s win total.

Personally, I think this game is as close to a crap shoot as you can get in college football. Neither team has a strong offense, or a strong defense, nor do they have any new recruits that are set to explode this season. The edge goes to Purdue, just because their playing in the Big Ten has them facing higher level competition more frequently than Western Michigan.

Purdue wins this one 16-10.
